We want to say a big thank you to all of our community helpers that took time out of their busy day to teach us!
We got to walk to town and visit two very special places. We went to the library and learned what librarians do. We even got to go behind the counter! Then we walked to the post office for a grand tour. Lynn the mail clerk told us all about her important job.

We have been working hard in our math notebooks. We work together to learn our new skills, and then on the other side of our notebook, we show that we can do it by ourselves. We love making flip books and playing spin & graph games! Eliazar says his favorite thing is to color the pictures in his notebook. Maelee and Dawson like to trace and write their numbers. Erick really likes using the spinners. Tonight is the night. I am so excited for SWC Open House. I have been working hard to make tonight just right for each and every one of you.
I hope you have had a fun, relaxing summer. I know I did. I was able to spend a week in Florida with my family on vacation and had many lazy days in the sun; however, I am so eager for the hustle and bustle of school to begin again. Feel free to leave a comment about tonight's Open House and take the survey on class home page.
We have said our final goodbyes. You are now looking at 1st graders! I just wanted to share something precious from these sweet kiddos. Each and every one of them have a special place in my heart and I will love them forever.
We had a great time at our annual Southwest City School Talent Show. This year
we danced to Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off." They did great! I am so proud. Mr. Chayton brought a really cool caterpillar to class this morning. We put him in a jar so that we could watch him throughout the day. It is a nice addition to our five painted lady caterpillars that arrived earlier this week.
None of us knew the kind of caterpillar Chayton brought, so we looked it up on the internet. We found a great caterpillar identification site to help us figure out what kind of caterpillar it is and that he will grow into a moth. Thank you Chayton for bringing such a cool discovery to school! We had a lot of fun today celebrating Earth Day! We learned about different types of pollution and then came up with great ways to conserve and become good stewards of our planet. We were able to share the 3 R's reduce, reuse, and recycle.
We sported our "I Love Earth Day" headbands around the building showing off our conservation enthusiasm! Spring is upon us and we are "springing" right into it. We have been learning about seeds, plants, and the life cycle of a plant this week. We started our unit off with reading Jack and the Beanstalk. Monday afternoon we were left a message by the Giant himself introducing us to measurement. He challenged us to find objects in our classroom that are longer than his footprint, shorter than his footprint, and even the same as his footprint. We were so excited about this activity. We measured many things in our classroom and then came together to share our discoveries. Engagement was high!
On Tuesday, we traced and cut out our own footprints. We then wanted to know how long they really were. We decided that cubes would be a nice way to measure "how many?" Eleven cubes long was the average length of our shoes in our classroom. We then lined them up from shortest to longest! Well, here we are with another snow day after our long weekend. I am usually all over the sledding and snowman building with my own kiddos, but unfortunately, the flu has hit our home and we are restricted to indoors. Because we are stuck inside and we are fighting boredom (and sick of TV), I thought I would share with you a couple of activities we have done here in the Reece home when we have felt up for it. Please share what you have been doing to help fight boredom at your house with your kiddos. Weston couldn't contain himself after the snow hit, but with his asthma flaring up and the potential of him getting sister's flu (which he did), I brought the snow to him. Abbie started feeling better today and was enjoying watching the birds. We found a recipe to make these really cool bird treats while brother was taking a nap.
3/4 cup flour 1/2 cup water 1 envelope unflavored gelatin 3 tablespoons corn syrup 4 cups of bird seed Mix the first 4 ingredients together and then add the bird seed. Coat it well. Spray muffin tins or cookie cutters with cooking spray. Pack bird seed mix in with the bottom of a measuring cup and use a drinking straw to form a hole. Let it sit for 2-3 hours. Then remove from molds. Let it finish sitting overnight. Lace string or ribbon through hole and hang up for the birds to enjoy! We read the fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears yesterday. After we listened to the story, we made character masks and took turns in groups of 4 re-enacting the story out for the class. It was a lot of fun.
