Wednesdays are library checkout day for kindergarten! We love to visit the library, where Mrs. Drake, our library aide, reads a story to us. After her amazing storytelling, we find a book to check out for the week.

Tying one's own shoe is a life skill that we encourage families to start working with their children by the time they reach kindergarten. This allows your child to become more self-sufficient and move them towards their independence. I have found a few videos to share with different strategies for teaching shoe tying. Shoe tying may seem basic to us adults, but it is a coveted skill among kindergarteners. It also fits under our first Leader in Me habit: Proactive- "We are responsible for ourselves." If you have a video that you would like to share, feel free to share the web address in the comments! We found out today from Kid President that 1 in 5 children in America may not know where their next meal is going to come from. Please watch and share the following video to help put an end to hunger in America. We have been busy this week here in kindergarten celebrating one of our favorite authors-Dr. Seuss. As a school, every class decorated our hallway door. We used our favorite Dr. Seuss book, Cat in the Hat. We also did a listening activity, where each student followed oral directions to draw Cat in the Hat. I think they did a Seusstastic job!
We have had lots of fun so far! We celebrated our 100th day of school today and had SO much fun! Here a few pictures of some of the fun things we did, including using an aging app to see what we may look like when we are 100 years old.
Today we played two different games online with ten frames. They are a lot of fun and we can play them at home too! Click the links below to find the games.
Ten Frame Mania Illuminations Ten Frame Game We had a big week last week. We were so busy that we never had a chance to slow down and blog about it. So here a few of the pictures to catch you up! Zoo PicsHalloween PicsToday we learned the nursery rhyme Row, Row, Row Your Boat. After we recited it, we participated in a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) activity. Mrs. Reece challenged us to build a boat from foil that would float, hold 5 people figures, and not let water inside. We worked in groups of 4-5, and each team solved the problem in a different way. It was a lot of fun and great learning!
Rhyming is an essential skill for kindergartners to master. Rhyming will help your child become a better reader and writer later on. Rhyming requires children to break words into smaller parts in spoken and written language. It exposes them to the rhythms of language.
Rhyming can be done anywhere you and your child are together whether it is in the car, the grocery store, or at the park taking a walk. There are plenty of online resources as well to help your child practice their rhyming skills. Click here to visit PBS Kids Rhyming games. Today we built our town! We used different kinds of blocks, Lincoln logs, and paper to create buildings and places in our town. We had to work together, talk it out, and try new ways when things didn't work the first time. We worked really hard to make our town of Southwest City.
Our creations included the library, the post office, the school, the bank, the water tower, the creek, houses, a bridge, streets, and even cross walks. We have learned a great deal about our community and it's helpers. |
